Maui: A Taste of Paradise

October 9, 2024 By admin No Comments

Explore the best of Maui: Beaches, Bites, and Beyond

Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, is a tropical paradise with its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, is the perfect destination for a chic, single traveler seeking adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re a foodie, a beach bum, or a fashionista, this island paradise has something to offer everyone.

Must-See Locations:

  • Road to Hana: This scenic drive offers breathtaking views of waterfalls, rainforests, and the Pacific Ocean. Stop at popular spots like Waimoku Falls, Black Sand Beach, and Twin Falls.
  • Kapalua Beach: This secluded picturesque family-friendly beach is perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing. Located on Maui’s West side, Kapalua is home to some of the most renowned names in the hotel hospitality industry: Montage, Ritz Carleton, and a slew of luxury villas.
  • Kaanapali Beach: This popular beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Enjoy beachfront dining and shopping at nearby resorts, such as Whalers Village in Lahaina for great food and shopping.
  • The Shops at Wailea: This historic whaling town offers charming shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Visit the Banyan Tree, one of the largest banyan trees in the world.
  • Iao Valley State Park: Hike to the base of Iao Needle, a towering rock formation surrounded by lush greenery. Learn about the history of the Hawaiian people at the visitor center.
  • Maui Ocean Center/The Aquarium of Hawaii: Be in awe of all the wonders of the Hawaiian ocean at the Maui Ocean Center. Experience magnificent views of the underworld up close and personal.  This is a must-see for kids and adults.

The Star of Restaurants

Maui’s culinary scene is a fusion of Hawaiian, Asian, and European influences. Personally, the most memorable spot on the island will always be the fresh fare at world-renowned Mama’s Fish House, a 3-star Michelin service restaurant. Mama’s Fish House is situated on a picturesque, secluded beach with epic ocean views on Maui’s North Shores; it is simply beachfront bliss. Everything about the restaurant is seductive elegance from the waitresses, the building, the Polynesian decor, the beautiful flowers down to the unique, scrumptious palate of food flowing out of the kitchen. Our family choose Mama’s Fish House to celebrate my son’s 40th birthday while in Maui. For appetizers, we had the superbly moist and flavorful Macadamia Nut Crab Cakes along with Ahi Poisson Cru with Tahitian lime, coconut milk, and island crips. The Grand Banks Scallops with coconut, lemongrass, and moringa were divine. The Seared Peppercorn Ahi with pearl mushrooms, Luan chimichurri with blue whipped sweet potatoes, were delicious and melted in one’s mouth. Lastly, the star of my dish, Antarctic Toothfish was caught at 6,000 feet depth under frozen glaciers and pan sautéed with caramelized Maui onions, Hawaiian chili, and avocado. Antarctic Toothfish tastes similar to Chilean Sea Bass; it just melts in the mouth. Mama put every other restaurant in Maui on the Shame List because she stands in a class alone.

Accommodations

We stayed at our 2-bedroom Westin Nanea Ocean Villa, located on 16 acres of prime beachfront on beautiful Kaanapali North Beach. The villas are spacious (1260 sq. ft.) with two large bedrooms, a luxury vessel tub, a living room, a huge kitchen, a balcony, and tons of storage space, including a pantry. Experience the ultimate luxury accommodations at this oceanfront resort offering spacious villas, daily events, and world-class amenities.

Tips for Your First Visit:

  • Pack for the weather: Maui’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and rain gear.
  • Rent a car: Flexibility to explore Maui at your own pace.
  • Try local cuisine: Don’t miss the opportunity to savor fresh seafood, tropical fruits, shaved ice, and other Hawaiian specialties. Do not miss the food trucks near the airport. By no means, do you miss Hula Cookies for the best cookies on the island along with wonderful flavors of velvet ice cream, especially the Ube flavor.
  • Respect the culture: Learn about Hawaiian customs and traditions, and be mindful of local customs. Learn basic Hawaiian words such as Aloha (hello, goodbye), Mahalo (thank you), and Kokua (help) and string them together to say: Mahalo for your kokua. Hawaii is all about Ohana (sense of community).
  • Favorite Grocery: My personal favorite grocery store in Maui was Foodland. I never made it to Whole Foods because Foodland had the freshest veggies, fruits, poke, fish and everything else needed for our stay.
  • Book activities in advance: Popular activities like whale watching and helicopter tours can fill up quickly, so book in advance.

Maui’s beauty and charm will leave you wanting to return again and again. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, this tropical paradise has something to offer everyone.

Until next time…A Hui Hou Hawaii!!!

A Memorable Family Celebration in Sunny Puerto Vallarta: Double Birthday Bash at Marriott Resort

August 12, 2024 By admin No Comments

After the pandemic, our family had the pleasure of celebrating two special birthdays in the vibrant, sun-drenched paradise of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. With 20 family members gathered at the luxurious Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa for five unforgettable days, we commemorated my two-year-old grandson’s birthday and his mother’s birthday in grand style. The resort boasts four restaurants, tequila bar, deli/coffee shop and an ice cream shop.

Day 1: Arrival and Warm Welcome

Our adventure began with a warm and sunny welcome at the Puerto Vallarta airport. The Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa, known for its excellent service and beautiful beachfront location, arranged comfortable transportation for our large group. Upon arrival, we were greeted with refreshing drinks and friendly smiles, setting the tone for the rest of our stay.

After settling into our spacious, ocean-view rooms, we gathered for a relaxed dinner at the resort’s flagship restaurant, Las Casitas. With a stunning view of the sunset over Banderas Bay, we enjoyed a variety of local dishes, from fresh ceviche to delectable shrimp tacos. The children delighted in their first taste of authentic Mexican cuisine, while the adults savored the resort’s signature margaritas. As the sunset and the kiddies settled down for the night, the younger crowd headed downstairs to the swanky Ceviche & Tequila Bar for some shots, fresh ceviche and more authentic flavors of Jalisco.

Day 2: Beach Fun and Birthday Celebrations

Our second day was dedicated to enjoying the resort’s swim-up bar and luxurious resort style cabanas as the pristine private beach was closed due to a gator alert. The little ones played in the spacious pools and built fictitious sandcastles, while the adults lounged under the shade of palapas, taking in the spectacular scenery. The resort staff went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a wonderful time, providing beach toys for the kids and refreshing drinks for the grown-ups.

In the afternoon, we celebrated my grandson’s second birthday with a special party by the pool. The resort’s event team decorated the area with colorful balloons and setup a table for the cake.  A delightful construction theme cake, custom-made by a local pastry chef, was the highlight of the celebration. Watching his eyes light up with joy as we sang “Happy Birthday” was a moment we will all cherish forever.

Dinner was superb at Mikado’s, where the staff rendered excellent service along with a scrumptious palette of flavors with Asian fusions and the teppanyaki chefs put on a show stopping performance for the two kids in our party.

Day 3: Exploring Puerto Vallarta

On the third day, we ventured beyond the resort to explore the vibrant town of Puerto Vallarta. We took a guided tour of the historic downtown area, known for its charming cobblestone streets and picturesque Malecon boardwalk. The family enjoyed shopping for souvenirs and tasting local street food, from tacos al pastor to sweet churros. Everyone was thrilled by the street performers and the colorful art installations along the Malecon. Lunch was at Nosh Sunset Bar & Bites a beachfront restaurant, where we savored fresh seafood tacos and took in the lively atmosphere.

Our evening at the “Rhythms of the Night” show in Puerto Vallarta was nothing short of magical. Set against the secluded beauty of Las Caletas Cove, the journey began with a scenic boat ride across Banderas Bay. As we arrived, the cove was illuminated by torches, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The dinner buffet, featuring a variety of delectable dishes, was a delightful prelude to the main show. The captivating performance, featuring a mesmerizing blend of music, dance, and acrobatics, left us all in awe. This unforgettable night under the stars was a highlight of our trip, creating lasting memories for the entire family.

Day 4: Adventure and Relaxation

Our fourth day was a mix of adventure and relaxation. Some family members opted for an exhilarating zip-lining tour through the lush jungles surrounding Puerto Vallarta, while others chose to unwind at the resort’s tranquil Ohtli Spa. The spa’s soothing treatments, inspired by ancient Huichol healing practices, provided the perfect escape. The Ohtli Spa has some of the best masseuse in the area. Our masseuse was delightful and very versed in the practice allowing us to unwind and fall asleep to the soothing feel of the deep tissue massage.

In the evening, we celebrated with a fabuleux dinner at Porfirio’s Restaurante known for its vibrant Mexican flavors and accents. The chefs prepared an exquisite multi-course meal featuring local specialties, paired with fine wines. The onsite mariachis and sophisticated upscale environment created a magical ambiance, making the night truly unforgettable.

Day 5: Farewell and Fond Memories

As our five-day celebration came to an end, we spent our final morning enjoying the resort’s amenities. The kids had a blast at the Kid’s Club, while the adults enjoyed one last swim in the infinity pool. Before heading to the airport, we gathered for a family breakfast, reminiscing about the wonderful memories we created together.

Our stay at the Marriott Resort in Puerto Vallarta was nothing short of perfect. The combination of stunning natural beauty, luxurious accommodations, and impeccable service made it an ideal setting for celebrating the birthdays of my grandson and his mother. This trip will forever hold a special place in our hearts, a reminder of the love and joy shared with family in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations.

Girlfriends’ 65th Birthday Trip to Mayan Riviera: A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Togetherness

June 17, 2024 By admin No Comments

Turning 65 is a milestone worth celebrating, and what better way to do it than with a lifelong girlfriend collective in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations? Recently, a close-knit collective of girlfriends decided to mark one Chica’s 65th birthday with an unforgettable trip to the Mayan Riviera, a stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s northeastern Yucatán Peninsula. This sun-soaked paradise offered the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and camaraderie, making it an ideal choice for such a momentous occasion.

Day 1: Arrival and Beachfront Bliss

The excitement was palpable we touched down at Cancun International Airport and took our private limousine service to the Mayan Riviera to luxuriate on its stunning beaches. Greeted by the warm Mexican sun and the rhythmic sound of waves crashing on the shore, we knew we were in for a treat as the vast doors to the resort slowly opened to lush greenery. Our home for the week is the luxurious all-inclusive adults-only resort of UNICO 20°87° – a member of the Leading Hotels of the world with stunning panoramic ocean view suites and direct access to powdery white sands.

UNICO 20°87

After settling in, the ladies wasted no time hitting the beach. With their toes in the sand and tropical drinks in hand, they lounged under linen-draped cabanas with bottle service and scrumptious appetizers, catching up on life and reminiscing about their many shared memories. The evening was capped off with dinner at Mi Carisa, an ode to the romantic coastlines and flavors of the Mediterranean, where we toasted to our enduring friendship and the adventures ahead. No evening should end on vacay without music and cocktails, so we headed over to the Cuban-inspired Palmera Lounge for some cocktails and boisterous live entertainment before retiring for the night.

Day 2: Fun in the Mayan Sun

Day two, we enjoyed a light breakfast and coffee at the Parisian-inspired Inez Café with a delicious palate of fresh pastries, coffee, smoothies, bite-size omelets, and freshly squeezed juices, and we dare not mention the delicious fresh baked cookies, macaroons, and ice cream served from 6 am to midnight daily. Next, we returned to our reserved cabana for a day of bottle-popping champagne, appetizers, tons of relaxation, and fun while enjoying breathtaking views. We even danced with the private mixologist who served specialty-concocted tequila shots through a syringe drop. Time flies when one is having so much fun. Before we knew it, it was time to return to our suites to rest up and get dressed for a private dinner at Mura House, delivering Asian flavors through three different styles of Japanese cuisine-teppanyaki, yakitori, and sushi. Of course, no night ends without entertainment and cocktails, so off to Bar BaLam for some of its infused mystique powerful spirits before catching some Z-z-z-z-z-z’s for the evening.

Mura House Appetizers

Day 3: Tulum Charter

Day three brought a sense of adventure as we prepared to set sail along the lush canals of Puerto Aventuras, feasting on steak and lobster aboard a private catamaran sailing to Playa La Bocana, an enchanting cove boasting crystal-clear waters before heading back to port. However, that excitement was dimmed as the captain called off the adventure due to high winds on the ocean. So, it was back to bottle popping at our private cabana, individual spa services at the luxurious Esencia Spa & Salon, and fitness classes of yoga, Pilates, and cross-training at the fitness center, all while reminiscing about swimming alongside colorful fish and graceful sea turtles, for a sense of wonder and joy that transcends age on that missed private yacht. After popping bottles all morning, we retreated to a beachfront lunch at 20.87 Restaurant serving up a huge variety of burgers, salads, sushi, cervices, and pasta to please any discriminating palate.

Late afternoon, we indulged in a day of pampering at the resort’s world-class spa. Massages, facials, and aromatherapy body treatments left them feeling rejuvenated and glowing. The serene atmosphere of the spa provided a perfect opportunity for quiet reflection and relaxation and rounded out a perfect day for the ladies before evening festivities. Personally, this was the best pedicure and manicure of my life, total luxury, worth every penny of the $105. The workers are engaging and work hard at this spa. Yes, the spa prices are extortionate, so be prepared if you ever venture to UNICO 20°87°. Lastly, please bring U.S. dollars to tip because it has more leverage than the pesos.

Day 4/5: Relaxation at One’s Own Leisure

For the next two days, we spent time relaxing in the hydro tubs on our suite deck and cabana stints during the early day by the pool. In the evening, we headed to a lively dinner at 20.87 Restaurant and Cueva Siete known for its Yucatecan Mexican gastronomy to sip, wine, champagne, and tequila, and celebrate our bond. Each night concluded with a drink at one of the bars or dancing and laughter as we marveled together in a first-time experience, a silent nightclub with headphones dancing into the night feeling a deeper connection to one another.

Day 6: Beachfront Farewell Fiesta Dinner

Collective Farewell Dinner

As our trip neared its end, we spent a leisurely day shopping and exploring UNICO’s Promenade Mall for gifts to take home for ourselves, friends, and family. We picked up unique mementos and enjoyed a delicious lunch on the beachfront. The afternoon was spent lounging by the sea, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and snapping photos to capture each magical moment. Of course, bottles of ice-cold champagne were still flowing. Before our private all-white farewell dinner, we met for a photo opportunity on the beach, all decked out in white attire set upon the crystal-clear turquoise green-blue waters of the ocean and gorgeous sky setting with perfect clouds. The finale evening was marked by a festive farewell fiesta on the beachfront and an exclusive private dinner at the restaurant reserved only for our collective. The private chef prepared a sumptuous 3-course feast of Mediterranean flavors with something for pescatarians, vegans, and meat lovers amongst the group. The night was filled with laughter, heartfelt toasts, and dancing under the stars, celebrating not just Chica’s 65th birthday, but a lifetime of friendship and memories.

Collective Bliss

Day 7: Reflecting on an Unforgettable Journey

As we packed our bags and prepared to return home, we each took a moment to reflect on this incredible journey. The Mayan Riviera adventure was everything we dreamed of and more—a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and togetherness. We left with hearts full of gratitude, vowing to continue celebrating life’s milestones together, no matter where our adventures might take us next.

THE GIRLFRIEND COLLECTIVE

The Mayan Riviera provided the backdrop for an unforgettable birthday celebration for lifelong friends, allowing us to return home with a renewed sense of joy, love, and appreciation for the gift of friendship. Here’s to many more adventures and memories to come! Until next time, love you Mayan Riviera! Thanks for the beautiful memories!

Savor the Seasonal Delight of Soft-Shell Crabs: A Palate-Pleasing Treat

June 12, 2024 By admin No Comments

The other day, I indulged in a scrumptious delicacy, the soft-shell crab at Surfrider’s Bayville location in Norfolk, Virginia. The location sits on a idyllic section of the Chesapeake Bay which houses a portion of the Navy’s Joint Expeditionary Base. One could sit here for hours and hours just staring into space. Soft-shell crabs, a delicacy cherished by seafood enthusiasts, are blue crabs that have recently molted their old exoskeleton and are still soft. This unique feature makes them edible, offering a tender, juicy bite.

Not only are soft-shell crabs delicious, but they are also a versatile ingredient in the kitchen. Soft-shell crabs can be prepared in various ways. Each method highlights the delicate texture and flavor of the crab. A popular preparation is to flash fry lightly coated soft-shell crabs in seasoned flour until golden brown, which creates a crispy exterior yet a juicy, succulent interior. Served with a squeeze of lemon or a tangy aioli, fried soft-shell crabs are a true delight.

The shedding shell process is fascinating and occurs several times a year. During the shedding period, the crab hides in the sand to avoid predators until their new shell hardens. This brief window of vulnerability is when they are harvested, providing a limited but much sought-after treat for seafood lovers.

Blue Crabs

Grilling is another excellent way to enjoy these crabs. A simple marinade of olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs enhances the sweetness of the crab. Grilled to perfection, they can be served over a fresh salad or as part of a seafood platter, making for a light yet flavorful meal. Here is an excellent and scrumptious recipe from a 2012 edition of the New York Food Journal which is divine.

Soft-shell crabs are a treat for the palate, not to mention their essential nutrients. They are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and various vitamins and minerals, making them a healthy addition to any diet.

The seasonal and highly perishable, soft-shell crabs are a fleeting pleasure, best enjoyed fresh. Ask any seafood aficionado, and they will proclaim that the soft-shell crab’s unique flavor and texture make them a must-try. Soft-shell crabs are a delightful taste of the ocean’s bounty whether fried, grilled, or on a brioche bun.

If you are a crab lover, make sure you grab some soft-shells crabs between the end of April through mid-September.

Bon Appetit!

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN

May 12, 2024 By admin No Comments

These words come to mind when I think of the word Mother:

M is MUNIFICENT
O is OPPORTUNITY
T is TRUST
H is HALCYON
E is for ENDEARING
R is for RESILIENCE

A Mother is generous with her time because she is a child’s biggest motivator. After all, GOD entrusted you with the opportunity of a lifetime to mold one of his creations. Therefore, a child trusts a mother to do the right thing; sometimes, that involves placing a child’s needs above personal needs. Every child needs halcyon days of youth. Remember, a motherhood club is an endearing place that some never get to embrace, so wear that crown honorably. If you cannot be a mother for whatever reason, help carry the torch of one who has fallen because it takes a Village and sometimes a Vineyard to raise responsible kids in this world. Lastly, a mother needs to bounce back from tough times. Remember that a young, impressionable mind is watching your every step. Ensure you give that child the right tools to bounce back from anything life throws at their feet.

Ask any mother; motherhood is not for the weak, so be thrilled that you are honored today by those you paved the way for yesterday.

Don’t forget to remember all our Queens who have transitioned to the next realm. We love, honor, and, most of all, miss their essence and presence. Thank you, our beloved ancestor Queens, for paving our stones.

Happy Mother’s Day, Queens!

HOW TO SPEND A SPLENDID DAY AT THE BEACH

June 24, 2023 By admin No Comments

Spending a day at the beach is perfect for soaking up some much-needed sun. Rays from the sun can be incredibly rejuvenating, and spending time in the sun can boost your mood, energy, and Vitamin D levels. Of course, safety is essential when sunbathing, so be sure to wear sunscreen and take shade in a cabana or under a beach umbrella or tent when needed. Check out Business & Pleasure for some of the trendiest chic cabanas, tents, and umbrellas which offer tons of protection from the sun.

Life is a beach; I’m just playing in the sand..

Another great thing about the beach is the chance to swim in the ocean. The ocean is a vast and mysterious place, full of fascinating creatures and beautiful sights, so have fun, but always be aware of that factor. Whether you are a seasonal swimmer or dipping your toes in the water, like me, there is something magical about being in the ocean.

Perhaps, like me, you are looking for more active beach fun; if so, there are plenty of beach activities to enjoy. Indulge in a game of beach volleyball, build sandcastles, parasailing, or surfing. And, if you are really feeling adventurous, rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the ocean from a new perspective.

Of course, spending a day at the beach is about more than just the activities. It is the perfect place and time to unwind and relax. Grab a great summer read, a beach blanket, and a delicious picnic spread, and enjoy the peaceful sound of the waves with no care in the world. If you are in the Hilton Head/Bluffton area and not in the mood for packing lunch or beach gear, check out coastalpicnicrentals.com and let them prepare your space on the beach for two glorious hours with lunch included. The catered lunch is scrumptious, and the beach setup is gorgeous. Or, if you are a social person, you can chat with other beach goers and make new dinner friends.

No matter how you spend your time at the beach, there is no denying that a day at the beach is a special and memorable experience. So, pack your sunscreen, grab your beach towel, and head to the beach for a day of fun, relaxation, and adventure.

Memorial Day aka Decoration Day

May 29, 2023 By admin No Comments

Today, we celebrate ALL the men and women in uniforms that represent freedom for the citizens of the United States. Every day we wake up without foreign invasion is worthy of praying for the men and women that ensured that was a possibility. The magnitude of their bravery and service is unfathomable.

Did you know that Memorial Day, formerly known as “Decoration Day” hails from Charleston, South Carolina? On May 1, 1865, former enslaved Union soldiers and missionaries removed the bodies of 257 Union soldiers who died in Confederate prisons from undignified mass graves and laid them to rest in proper graves as an act of gratitude for serving in the military. The soldiers deemed the day Decoration Day, which Americans now celebrate nationally. As we gather with friends and family and head to the beach or cookouts, remember the men and women who died so that we could have freedom.

So today, in memory of MANY, in honor of ALL, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Happy Thanksgiving

November 24, 2022 By admin No Comments

As we gather with friends and family on this thankful day: please remember the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Remember what we are giving thanks for this year. Before you indulge in all the trimmings and feast upon the many offerings, try this concept. The late honorable Edna Moseley (Aurora, Colorado’s first African American City Council Member) and her late husband, John Moseley (one of the Tuskegee Airmen), introduced me to this concept during Thanksgiving dinner at their home one year. After praying over the food, have each member at the table recite one thing they are thankful for this year. This became a tradition in our home, and I pray it becomes one in your home. I am thankful for the lessons and blessings all those who journeyed through my life imparted to me. I love and miss each of those individuals, especially during the holidays. I am thankful to the late Moseleys for introducing my family to this tradition. Enjoy your bounty, and be thankful for your time with family and friends today. Find nice ways to give thanks daily! Be Blessed, and don’t forget to take a beach stroll whether warm or cold; it is good for the soul!

SITTIN’ ON THE DOCK OF SKULL CREEK

September 4, 2022 By admin No Comments

It’z just one of those Saturdays on Hilton Head when you just want to sit on the edge of Port Royal Sound at Hudson’s Seafood on the Dock and do absolutely nothing but indulge in some of the freshest local Seafood that the crew hauls in daily and drink a nice cold pilsner of beer. How does six half-pound jumbo shrimp with a spicy cocktail sauce, coconut shrimp dipped in a citrus Thai chili sauce, and a Maryland-style jumbo, colossal lump blue crab cake sound? Wash all that deliciousness down with a nice cold Corona Light with not a worry in the world. That is what you call sitting on the dock of Skull Creek, watching the time roll away on Hilton Head Island.

Hudson’s is located at 1 Hudson Road off Highway 278. The restaurant’s dock boasts magnificent views of Skull Creek on the Port Royal Sound. The family-owned restaurant has been serving fresh local Seafood since 1967, and no visit to the island would be complete without sitting on the dock enjoying a sunset happy hour or dinner. Hudson’s operates from 11:00 am to 900 pm, Monday through Saturday, and from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm on Sundays.

It'z a Shore Thang!

A Killer View

August 30, 2022 By admin No Comments

Lee’s Launch at Rowing & Sailing at Squire Pope Community Park

One of my fave places at home on Hilton Head Island is the Rowing and Sailing Center at Squire Pope Community Park, which opened in December 2014. The park is dedicated to Lee Edwards, an Hilton Head Island city council member from 2011-2016 who also happens to be the president and CEO of The Greenery, Inc., one of the island’s best landscaping companies. The view is exquisite; so serene and peaceful. These beautiful optics were captured earlier this month while showing my brother some of the island’s natural beauty. The center is located at 137 Squire Pope Road, which is accessible directly off Highway 278. You will often find locals fishing, crabbing, or just taking in the beauty of the scenery off the pier. It is a magnificent sight to reflect on the small things that make life enjoyable.

Take a peep and check out Lee’s Launch on your next visit to the island.

Happy Juneteenth!!!

June 19, 2022 By admin No Comments

Grand Rising on this glorious Sunday Morning,

Happy Juneteenth! Today is a day of Liberation Commemorating the Emancipation of Enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865.

My grandfather was born a free man in Conyers, Georgia in 1894. My grandfathers parents likely endured slavery in the Atlanta area, and received their liberation on this day in 1865. I truly miss watching all day Saturday westerns shows with my grandparents. We salute our ancestors on this day, because all they endured, we were set free. But, we must ensure that history never repeats itself for our kids and future generations.

I honor them today with no purchases being made anywhere today.

Malibu Vibes

March 8, 2022 By admin No Comments

No Cali trip is complete without a trip to the coastal beach city of Malibu in the Santa Monica Mountain region of Los Angeles County. Whether beachy, chic, or casual, whatever you crave, one can find it in Malibu. If your heart craves a Mediterranean climate with a laid-back feel, look no further. Head to Malibu! Make your first stop, Malibu Farm Restaurant, on the pier.

Malibu Farm Restaurant is a superb farm-to-table restaurant, which sits at the entrance of the Malibu Pier. Every visit is a delightful treat! My son ordered the colorful spotlight tacos trio during this early January lunch, consisting of three colorful flour tortillas, topped with sizzling skirt steak, butternut squash, and grilled chicken. The sizzling skirt steak taco contained radishes, pickled onion, cabbage, corn, black beans, cheese, and salsa Rojo. The butternut squash taco was filled with a combination of butternut and spaghetti squash, along with spicy habanero salsa, scrumptious. The chicken taco had a weird but oh so delicious combination of grilled chicken, shredded brussel sprouts, corn, cheese, black beans, with salsa verde on a colorful red tortilla. I ordered the Build your Own Fish Taco, and it was divine. Warning, the Build Your Own Fish Taco is a big plate. The plate arrives with a big, beautifully seared branzino fillet, shredded cabbage, cucumber tomato pico, pepper jack cheese, cilantro crema, and a grilled melody of carrots, broccoli, grilled fresh corn, and cauliflower served with three colorful fresh warm tortillas. Every morsel was scrumptious! To quench your thirst, try the fresh Mint Lemonade.

By the way, if you desire to sit above the waves directly on the ocean, head straight to the end of the pier and dine at the Malibu Farm Cafe. Both the restaurant and cafe are owned by founder/chef Helene Henderson, who farms some of the lovely beautiful, delicious vegetables that don the tables of both entities.

The atmosphere for both locations is casually relaxed, with a hint of upscale chic in the restaurant. The cafe is counter service and serves beer and wine with no reservations. The restaurant offers table service with full-service alcohol and accepts dinner reservations. Visit Malibu Farm at 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, California.

Tocaya Modern Mexican

January 15, 2022 By admin No Comments

One Saturday morning, while visiting not-so-sunny southern California during the holiday season, the family journeyed to Tocaya Modern Mexican in Studio City. Tocaya is located in a hip new modern picturesque outdoor shopping mall comprising nice restaurants, specialty boutique shops, and Erewhon Market, similar to the original Whole Foods design.

Tocaya is a swank, modern, chic, upscale take on Mexican Baja food. Inside, the restaurant’s back extends into an outdoor living room patio with beautiful seating outfitted in tones of blue, green, and neutral beiges, rattan, and tons of greenery. The food ranges from Mexican-inspired bowls, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, delicious cinnamon churros, and an array of waters, glass bottled sodas, wines, and beers. It is the first bar I have visited that advises consumers that alcohol use can lead to cancer and birth defects.

I ordered the Spicy Cilantro Verde Bowl containing a beautifully arranged array of avocado, diced cucumbers, seasoned chickpeas, marinated kale, cilantro-lime rice, and delicious spicy cilantro Verde sauce. The chef recommended vegan chicken and vegan mozzarella with the order, but I declined those choices. By the way, the spicy cilantro Verde sauce is absolutely scrumptious and banging with bold flavors. My family munched on the breakfast burrito filled with cage-free eggs, black bean purée, a trio of colorful peppers, caramelized onions, poblano peppers, beef chorizo, jalapeño Jack cheese, and tomatillo salsa, all combined in a flour tortilla. My two-year-old grandson thoroughly enjoyed his chicken quesadilla with cilantro lime rice; this is the first time he ate nearly every morsel of his food. We rounded our breakfast out with the yummy cinnamon waffle churros with a dipping sauce.

Tocaya Modern Mexican Cinnamon Churros

Tocaya definitely lives up to its name; it is the talk of the town amongst hipsters throughout the west. Visit Tocaya locations in Studio City, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Scottsdale, Venice Beach, La Jolla, Hollywood, Century City, Tempe, and Phoenix.

CITY BEACH

CITY BEACH

There is something magical about growing up along the coastline during the 1950s, perhaps because 1957 holds a special place in my heart. Hearing African-Americans in the Hampton Roads area speak on the subject; the mind automatically flashes to Virginia Beach. Still, long before the boardwalk ushered us to into their haven, there was City Beach.

City Beach is a public beach located along the shores of East Beach, an award-winning tony beach community on the Chesapeake Bay. On June 16, 1935, the beach officially opened as a public beach and was annexed to Norfolk in 1959. City Beach was unique to African Americans because it was 11-acres of land on the Chesapeake Bay dedicated to us for family gatherings, crabbing, BBQs, and basking in the sun. I recall spending the Fourth of July at City Beach with friends at the dance hall or walking the boardwalk during the 1970s.

Today, City Beach is officially called East Beach and remains a public beach surrounded by million-dollar homes. When in Norfolk, I reside in East Beach, and recently during a daily walk, I noticed the City of Norfolk placed a historical marker on June 7, 2018, at one of the public walkways leading into the dunes toward the beach.

5 Top Edible Vineyard Spots for 2021

September 20, 2021 By admin No Comments

Island Time
Island Time

As summer metamorphoses into fall, memories of summer 2021 on my beloved Vineyard are still fresh in my mind. There is little about the Vineyard that I do not love, so when a friend inquired about my five top spots for this year, it was hard. But, as the great Maya Angelou said: “Love is many things, it is varied, but one thing it can never be is unsure,” so here is what I know for sure:

The Black Sheep 17 Airport Road, Edgartown (508)338-7770. Scrumptious bites and takeaways … everything we took away, including the citrus shrimp, quinoa with veggies, and chicken, and salmon was mouthwatering. “Your Table … Our Food;” dinner is a wrap!

The Fish House 17 Airport Road, Edgartown (508)693-0055. The fresh fish here is the stuff every top chef desires to smell and taste. The two huge slabs of salmon we grilled for dinner were divine. I have not tasted salmon that good in years! Dad always said: If the fish smells, let him be! And, if fresh fish is not your thing, order take-out food. The clam chowder and clam plate are spectacular too!

Stella Salumeria, 6 Circuit Avenue, Oak Bluffs (508)338-7457. The sweet spot for Italian beach and picnic sandwiches plus French baked goods. The gang loved the Italian-inspired sandwiches with chips in the beach cooler. Those sandwiches soothed the soul in our sweet spot at the cliffs.

Mad Martha’s Ice Cream (OB, ED, VH). My favorite iconic ice cream spot for Pistachio and Blueberry ice cream treats, now when one mentions ice cream, my whole family heads straight there while on the island. Vineyard habits are passing down!

Biscuits 28 Lake Avenue, Oak Bluffs (508)693-2033. It must be my New Orleans roots or just a love for shrimp and grits, whatever the reason, Biscuits delivered on a whim.

The Sweet Life Cafe belongs on this list too, but as the dedicated babysitter for date night, I could not partake but heard all the raves about my superb recommendation.

Bon Appetit!!!

A DIFFERENT KIND OF FACE MASK

June 7, 2021 By admin No Comments

TIME FOR A NEW MASK

Say the word face mask today, and the mind automatically visualizes one that covers for protection. Well, pull off one face mask and put on another.

MIX INGREDIENTS

1 TSP Fresh Lemon Juice;

1/4 Cup Fresh Blueberries;

1 TSP Brown Sugar; and

1/4 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt.

Whip the ingredients in a blender to form a paste. No blender, no problem, just mash them good in a bowl. You can substitute raw honey for brown sugar. Apply the paste to your face and neck with clean hands or a clean makeup or paintbrush and let it sit for 15-minutes. Wash off with cold water to close pores. Repeat twice a week for brighter radiant skin. Dispose of any unused mask.

HAPPY EASTER

April 4, 2021 By admin No Comments

As a little girl growing up on the Chesapeake Bay shores, hunting for eggs on Easter Sunday was a favorite activity. When I became a mother, this activity was shared with my son and now his sons.

Easter 2021 is special because now, the youngest grandson is 17-months. So, we will paint eggs to hide for him and his cousin to enjoy the same ritual. As I write this posting, my heart is a little heavy because so many kids coast-to-coast no longer have an opportunity to partake in this beautiful Easter ritual because their journeys were cut short due to this world’s woes. Little Lyric Chanel lost her battle with brain cancer last month, and my thoughts are with her family this Easter.

Hug your kids and grandkids, and cherish the moments spent with them this Easter Sunday because somewhere somebody in this world only has that memory etched on their heart.

Rest-in-Peace Lyric Chanel, we will hide some baby blue eggs just for YOU!

PURE JUICE

“GIVE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM A NEW LEASE ON LIFE.” – PAVI
Pineapple/Ginger/Turmeric Fresh Squeezed Juice

As an avid juicer for years, I do not purchase juices at the grocery store but juice my fruits and herbs at home. This way, one knows what is in the bottle.

With COVID-19 slashing dashes between spaces at enormous speed, protecting one’s immune system is a necessity! Being conscious of what goes into one’s bodily temple is extremely important nowadays; therefore, here is a natural concoction to heal and soothe the temple, plus it is scrumptious! All you need are four ingredients: fresh pineapple, fresh ginger root, fresh mint leaves, and fresh turmeric root. Place all the ingredients into a juicer, which turns the ingredients into a golden hue of delicious juice. Take a shot throughout the day for maximum health.

If you are new to the art of juicing, try the Breville line of juicers. Williams-Sonoma stocks different versions at great prices, from the novice to the master juicer. The juice is displayed in an Italian glass bottle from Amazon and extracted by the Breville Juice Fountain Cold, XL.

RECIPE: Use 1-2 Pineapples; 1 large piece of ginger root; 1 large piece of turmeric root, and a bunch of fresh mint leaves. Wash and rinse all fruits and herbs. Core and slice the pineapple, chop the ginger and turmeric root into bite-size pieces to place into the juicer chute.

Juicing from home every day is a shore thang for optimum health!

Bon Appetit!

2021: THE GAME CHANGER

Fly Like an Eagle in 2021. At the stroke of midnight all over the globe, a new year ushered into the sphere. We all get 365 blank new canvases to draw a new reality. What will your canvases reflect? Will they be images of the past or new reflections with endless possibilities? As I look back over 2020, although there was endless pain throughout the world, I learned to appreciate the simple things in life: (1) good health, (2) comfort in my present environment, and (3) an abundance of new online friends and connections. Become a legend in your own right by starting 2021 with a new agenda and mindset. Board your private jet in 2021 and leave the excess baggage of 2020 on the commercial flight. Release it now! Boldly walk into 2021 painting the first canvas with a new possibility starting right now! Let the world serve as your canvas and start painting endless possibilities in your imagination. There are many layers to life; one needs to be open to receiving.

Be abundantly blessed — it’s a shore thang!

3-Steps to a Well-Stocked Pantry

December 15, 2020 By admin No Comments

As we all continue to find solace in our humble abodes, nourishing meals are necessary for healthy immune systems.

Winter 2020 is slowly approaching in the Northern Hemisphere and will descend upon us on Monday, December 21st.  Snow will blanket the beaches, and leaves will swiftly leave our trees bare, so now is the perfect moment to embark upon writing a list of non-perishable items to stock the pantry.

Use the 3-Step Guide: (1) access what the pantry currently holds; (2) when to use it by; or (3) whether to toss it. Believe it or not, pantry items expire! Items such as baking soda, baking powder, rice, nuts, and oils last around 6-months on the shelves. Brown rice and nuts become rancid quickly, so store in plastic containers or freezer bags inside the refrigerator. Cooking oils turn rancid after about 3-months once unsealed, so forgo the larger containers unless you cook for an army: store flour, cornmeal, oats, and quinoa in the refrigerator for longevity.

Upgrade your pasta with legume-based pasta such as chickpeas and lentils, which is healthier than brown rice. Ditto for rice; venture into black rice such as Forbidden Rice, which contains more protein than brown rice, and is delicious with a delightful nutty flavor.

During the pandemic is a great time to be less carnivore and more plant-based, which is better for the immune system. Splurge on heirloom beans from Rancho Gordo. Try the French Cassoulet beans, midnight black beans, or pinto beans; all are superb and superior to any store package beans on the market.

Another excellent source for flavorful beans hails from the Creole country of New Orleans. My late godmother introduced me to Camellia beans over 35-years ago, and they still rank first place over all other brands. Try an assortment of beans such as red kidney beans, field peas, black-eyed peas, cannellini beans, garbanzo beans, black beans, lima beans, and navy beans, all from the comfort of your home and a few strokes.

This winter, for a bountiful pantry, start stocking it with these items:

Flours: Almond, Coconut, Cake, Whole-Wheat and Unbleached White

Cacao: Droste Dutch Chocolate Powder, Guittard Unsweetened Chocolate Baking Bars & Bittersweet Chocolate Baking Bars

Nuts & Dried Fruits: Almonds, Cashews, Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios, Dates, Cranberries, Raisins, and Sun-dried Tomatoes

Oils: Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (Cold-Pressed), Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, Truffle Oil, Sesame Oil, Peanut Oil

Canned & Bottled: Tonnino Tuna (Best on the market), Italian Plum Tomatoes, Chicken Broth, Capers, Olives, Tabasco, Mustard (variety), Vinegar (Braggs Apple Cider, Aged-Balsamic, White Distilled, Red Wine, Rice), Sherry, Braggs Coconut Liquor Aminos, Tamari Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Fish Sauce, Mayonnaise, Pickles

Sweeteners: Coconut Sugar, Raw Honey, Pure Maple Syrup, Dark & Light Brown Sugar, Molasses (Dark & Light), Powdered Sugar

Pasta: Fettuccine, Angel Hair, Penne, Orzo, Lasagna, Macaroni, Bucatini

Miscellaneous: Panko Bread Crumbs, Grits (Palmetto Farms), Cornmeal (Palmetto Farms), Polenta, Oatmeal, Almond Milk, Rice Milk, Cashew Milk, Real Popcorn

Dried Beans: Green Lentils, Black-Eye Peas, Cannellini, Split Peas

Rice: Jasmine Rice, Basmati Rice, Brown Rice

Small changes pack ample nutrition and scrumptious flavors!

DETOX AT HOME

Detox at Home

DETOX AT HOME

Creating beautiful skin is still possible, even if you were not blessed with such at birth. The creation starts with taking care of the skin you are presently in at the moment. To do so requires little more than a natural fiber brush and good old elbow work.

Grab a natural fiber brush and brush your skin all over before showering or bathing in circles toward the heart. Avoid the tender areas around the breast. I use two brushes; one is short and the other possesses a long handle to completely reach the back area.

This kind of skin-brushing done daily is one of the simplest yet most effective treatments for lumpy thighs and hips, not to mention cheap.

Dry brushing does two things: (1) eliminates toxic waste through the surface of the skin, not only in one’s cellulite areas but over the entire body; and (2) stimulates lymphatic drainage all over the body.

After showering, slightly towel dry off and place a light oil like sesame, almond or if those are too expensive for your budget; use a plain organic extra virgin olive oil all over the body, So grab a natural fiber brush and get busy!

IT’S A SHORE THANG!

ANATOMY OF CREDIT CARD INTEREST

September 21, 2020 By admin No Comments

This month’s post is not about the beach, but it may help you get to your dream of owning a beach or lake house quicker.

Have you ever opened your credit card bill and said: Wow, my balance does not seem to be moving? Well, here is why.

Let’s say your Citibank credit card balance is $2000 with a 2% minimum monthly payment, and a 21% Annual Percentage Rate (APR).

To calculate your Minimum Monthly Payment: Take the $2000 balance and multiply it by your minimum monthly payment percentage due ($2000 x .02 = $40), which equates to $40.

To calculate your Monthly Percentage Rate: Take the APR and divide it by 12 (12 symbolizes the number of months in a calendar year). So, in this case, we have a 21% APR. So, divide (21/12=1.75%) to determine the minimum monthly percentage rate of your balance due each month. In this scenario, the monthly percentage rate is 1.75 of the $2000 balance.

Now, let’s calculate the Monthly Interest Payment. Take the credit card balance and multiply it by your Monthly Percentage Rate. For example, $2000 x 1.75% (.0175) equates to $35.00. So, the amount of interest being added to the credit card balance this month is $35.00.

Finally, let’s see how much the credit card balance decreases this month. So, a credit card payment of $ 40 is mailed to Citibank. Citibank takes the $40 payment and charges you $35 in interest fees and applies $5 toward your balance. As one can see, the $40 payment only reduces the original balance of $2000 to $1995. It will take you eons to just pay off $1900.00 because Citibank and all your other cards will take their cut first, and then apply the remainder toward your balance.

Looks like it might take you a very long time to purchase that dream cottage on the beach unless you stop spending money you do not have. Credit cards are great if you pay the entire balance every month, pay an extra $50 to $100 toward the principal amount or pay bi-monthly to cut interest cost—some institutions need to be informed that the extra money goes towards principal only. If not, use cash. Become the banker and start stashing those interest payments in an account for that dream beach cottage.

Seas the Day!

It’s a beach thang!

3 Lemon Detox Drinks

August 4, 2020 By admin No Comments

Delicious Tangy Lemons

Kickstart your immune system with some lemon water. A few simple ingredients can detox your body and put your immune system on the right track.

Drink One: Grab some fresh organic lemons and wash them to remove the sticky residue. Cut the lemon in half and place one half into a lemon hand presser at a time. Place the flesh of the lemon face down towards the holes in the presser. Just squeeze the two handles to extract the delicious fresh lemon juice. Dispose of the pulp, pith, and seeds. Stir the fresh juice into 8 ounces of water and drink. Add a straw to save tooth enamel erosion.

Drink Two: Fetch some fresh organic lemons, fresh sprigs of mint, cucumber, fresh ginger root, and water. Slice lemons thinly. Peel fresh ginger root and slice into thin rounds. Wash and slice the cucumber into rings. Do not peel the cucumber. Wash the fresh sprigs of mint. I leave the mint on the sprigs and stuff about 3-4 springs in the pitcher. Just place everything into a pitcher and fill with water. Stir the ingredients and place the pitcher into the refrigerator. Drink all day to quench your thirst and hydrate your skin. Refill the pitcher for 1 to 2 days with water.

Drink Three: Fetch some lemons, fresh strawberries, basil, and sprigs of fresh mint. Wash and assemble all the ingredients into a pitcher, and fill with filtered water. Stir the ingredients and enjoy!

Fabulist Plant-Based Summer Skin

July 11, 2020 By admin No Comments

OSEA

Everything about the sea is fascinating! Think about it, the sea provides food, enjoyment, beauty, a mode of transportation, minerals, and natural products for our daily skincare.

Osea is the appropriate name for my summer skincare regimen. This line provides “bioavailable formulas rich in the essences of the earth and ocean.” It feels and smells lovely and takes me to one of my favorite places every morning and evening, the sea.

OSEA
“Results You Can Sea!” — OSEA

The morning regimen consists of using a quarter size of Ocean Cleanser, a plant-based seaweed cleansing gel with lactic acid on my face, and gently scrubbing with a sea sponge. The Ocean Cleanser contains algae, cypress oil, jojoba seed oil, juniper leaf essential oil, and vegan fermented beet lactic acid. Then top it off with a spray of Sea Mineral Mist to tone the skin. Follow that up with a few dabs of Blemish Balm, which is great for oily skin and breakout-prone skin. This light moisturizer contains three types of seaweed, tree tea oil, and juniper and thyme essential oils. It gives my skin a matte dewy finish, which is divine.

The evening regimen consists of using the Ocean Cleanser, Sea Mineral Mist, and twice a week use the age-defying White Algae Mask to brighten my skin. The best part is you can leave the mask on overnight and wash off in the morning.  The mask contains Mineral Peptides to firm and plump, Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate, and Resveratrol to brighten the skin. I love this mask!

Is your skin screaming for hydration? Reclaim your body glow with a concoction of seaweed and the luscious seed oils of acai, babassu, and passion fruit in a bottle of Undaria Algae Body Oil. Smooth this lavish oil all over your body for a beautiful sheen. It is non-greasy and packed with potent vitamins, nutrients, and minerals to boost a beautiful sheen. Follow up your oil splash with the silky sea mineral formula of Anti-Aging Body Balm, illuminating the skin and improving skin elasticity. It truly is “skincare powered by the sea!”

This regimen truly fuels my passion for the sea—give it a try at http://www.oseamalibu.com/.

HYDRANGEAS FEEL LIKE SUMMER

June 3, 2020 By admin No Comments

The hydrangea still hails as Cape Cods quintessential flower that lines the windows and yards of most homes from Maine to Martha’s Vineyard.

As a seasonal vacationer of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, on the tiny island of Martha’s Vineyard, I love viewing the flower boxes and yards draped in vibrant and colorful hydrangeas.

I recall the first time stepping foot on the island and pulling up at my late friend Anne’s home. As my eyes set on the blueberry hydrangeas lining the sides of her home, she told me to cut as many as possible to fragrant the house, as though she had read my mind.

The temperamental hydrangea became one of my favorite flowers. I learned how to care for and sustain them for more extended periods.

To sustain hydrangeas, when they droop, snip them at the bottom and place in hot water to revive. This one little procedure will have your hydrangeas lasting for at least two weeks.

It’s Back: The Best Coastal Magazine on the Planet

March 23, 2020 By admin No Comments

If you are an avid coastal lover as myself, you definitely read the best coastal magazine on the planet, Coastal Living.

As a college student, I eagerly awaited my monthly copy of Coastal Living Magazine. Kicking off my shoes on a Saturday with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and perching on the couch to divulge the entire copy from cover-to-cover was a familiar scene for 21 years.

In 2018, the sad news that the presses of Coastal Living were coming to a screeching halt made me shed tears. Now, 21 years later, I am stalking the local bookstores for the newsstand-only quarterly edition.

But, when a publication has great bones, a few changes will make a monumental difference in how it resurfaces in a cemetery of buried magazines. And my friends, Coastal Living has done just that:)

It elated me to open the mailbox and find a letter from Meredith Corporation with a special rate for charter members to return as subscribers. Passionate members of the magazine all over the world are once again being drawn to the sea.

Welcome home Coastal Living!

2020: START AFRESH

February 6, 2020 By admin No Comments

LOTS of people make a big deal about New Year’s Resolutions…but not me! 2020 finds me taking a new perspective on an old habit. This year, I am posting my resolutions during the first week of February versus the first day of January.

Most people make resolutions they have no intention of sticking to because they make the wrong resolutions. Losing 50 pounds when you have no intention of working out, eating healthy or giving up alcohol is a bust from the start.

So, what’s the solution? Take baby steps and commit to one or two major changes to institute in your life.

Here are two of my favorite resolutions for this year: gratitude and forgiveness. Adopt a habit of being grateful for everything in your life. Express gratitude for the people, objects, and things in your life, and discover how blessed you truly are on this realm. Second, be the bigger person and forgive all the people that have truly disappointed you in the past. Phone or write that individual and let them know exactly how they disappointed you and release it back into the universe. You never know, some individuals may not have realized that they offended you and attempt to right the wrong. Now the ball is in your court. Do what you wish with it but release the pain and anger. If two resolutions are too much, just pick one! Neither way, as Nike’s tagline goes, “Just Do It!”

Now, write those resolutions in a letter to yourself and file it away. At the close of 2020, open it and see how much you have accomplished. I bet it will be further than those old resolutions for sure.

Be well!

How to Eat Like a Local on Martha’s Vineyard for $50 a Day

June 5, 2019 By admin No Comments

The tiny Island of Martha’s Vineyard takes your breath away. The ‘Vineyard’ as it is cheerfully nicknamed by locals and seasonal residents evokes pleasant memories of a simplistic bygone era.

My affair with the Vineyard started 40 years ago. The island is known for catering to the rich and famous, but they are just locals when vacationing on this gem of an island. I have shared conversations with LeVar Burton, Spike Lee, Holly Peete Robinson and Carly Simon, and trust me they are just fun people sharing a tony island together. The Vineyard showcases some of the best seafood that makes your mouth salivate for more. Believe it or not, you can eat in Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven and Edgartown on a budget of $50 a day. Let’s run through a three-day stay covering three meals and snacks for $50 per day.

Day One starts in Oak Bluffs amongst the historic campgrounds which served as the first resort for elite African Americans. For a hearty breakfast, eat at Biscuits and partake in a scrumptious buttermilk biscuit, two slices of crispy bacon, two eggs anyway and a cup of coffee for $10. Now that’s good eating for less money. For lunch, stroll over to Giordano’s Clam Bar for a delicious haddock sandwich with fries for under $10.00. At sunset, stroll down the dock to The Shuck Shack and suck your teeth into a buttery lobster roll with fries for $15 or a steamed 1 ½ pound lobster in butter with fresh corn on the cob. After sunset, satisfy your sweet tooth with a tantalizing sugary donut from Back Door Donuts from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Beware lines are in the hundreds.

Day Two leads us to Vineyard Haven, a beautiful year-round port. Stop for breakfast at an organic spot dubbed Waterside Market for a traditional breakfast of two eggs, roasted potatoes, toast and choice of meat for $11.00. Pick up lunch at The Net Result for around $12.  Run to Grace Episcopal Church at 4:30 p.m. for a delicious lobster roll, chips and drink for $17. If you miss the lobster roll, return to Waterside Market for their mouthwatering organic burger with homemade fries for $17. Remember, nothing says summer like a double dip of ice cream!

Day Three takes us to the elegant whaling town of Edgartown for breakfast at Espresso Love. Indulge in cappuccino with a sunrise English muffin of egg, bacon and cheese for $10. Lunch takes us to Amongst the Flowers Cafe for a grilled chicken sandwich with chips for $11. Dinner leads us to Backyard Taco for fish tacos with a drink for under $20.00.

As your time on this idyllic island winds down, make a dash to the Menemsha fishing village to catch the sunset. Stop at Lauren’s Fish Market for a steamed lobster, and don’t forget to bring a bottle of vino. That’s living Vineyard style! See you next time!

Finding Christmas Magic: A Coastal Town Escape

December 25, 2024 By admin No Comments

Standing on the threshold of Christmas has a new meaning for me these days. It’s no longer about the frantic race for the “perfect” gifts or the overwhelming pressure to create the most Instagrammable holiday decorations.

Instead, I find myself drawn to the quiet charm of a small coastal town, where the true spirit of Christmas seems to come alive. Small coastal towns allow the holiday season to unfold gently, filled with heartwarming traditions and a strong sense of community.

Imagine waking up to the sight of snow dusting the sandy beaches, the crisp air filled with the sound of distant waves. Cozy up in a bay window, sipping hot cocoa by the fire while watching the harbor come alive with festive lights.

The town square transforms into a winter wonderland, adorned with twinkling lights and the aroma of roasted chestnuts and spiced cider. Local artisans showcase their handcrafted treasures at festive markets, offering unique gifts that capture the season’s essence.

Carols fill the air as residents gather for a community tree lighting ceremony, their voices echoing through the streets. Children’s laughter fills the air as they eagerly await Santa’s arrival, their eyes sparkling with anticipation.

In this small coastal haven, Christmas is about slowing down, appreciating the simple joys, and connecting with the people and places that most matter. It’s about rediscovering the season’s magic and cherishing the warmth of human connection.

One may ask, where is this magical coastal town? Well, they are sprinkled across the globe.

May This Christmas be your most memorable yet!

A Brief Summer Comprehensive Cleaning Guide

“Summer-Ready: The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Beach House”

“Transform Your Seaside Retreat into a Sparkling Summer Haven”

As the warm breezes and sunny days of summer approach, it’s time to ready your beach house for the season. A thorough cleaning will ensure your retreat is fresh, inviting, and ready for countless summer memories. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get your beach house sparkling clean.

1. Declutter and Organize

Begin by removing any clutter that has accumulated over the off-season. Go through each room and gather items that no longer serve a purpose. Donate, recycle, or store away off-season items to create a more spacious and serene environment.

2. Deep Clean Surfaces

Start with a deep clean of all surfaces. Dust and wipe down furniture, light fixtures, and ceiling fans. For air vents, use the homemade disinfectant with a soft cloth and clean the grates inside and outside. Pay special attention to high-touch areas like doorknobs and light switches. Use Method All-Purpose Cleaner to clean these surfaces in an array of scents from peony, rose, lavender and so many more. These products will ensure your home is free from dust and grime.

3. Refresh Floors and Carpets

Sweep and vacuum all floors to remove sand and debris. If your beach house has carpets, consider renting a carpet cleaner or hiring a professional service to give them a deep clean. For hardwood, use Method Daily Wood Cleaner, a plant-based wood cleaner to mop the floor. For tile floors, use the homemade disinfectant to restore their shine. If the tile grout is filthy, use Soft Scrub with a scrub brush to remove the embedded dirt. It may take more than one application, but it works wonderfully. Open the windows and allow the scent to dissipate and the fresh air to dry the floor. After the embedded dirt is removed, keep the floors clean by daily wiping the floors with homemade disinfectant to avoid another buildup of dirt.

4. Air Out and Clean Upholstery

Use sunny days to air out cushions, pillows, and mattresses. This helps eliminate any musty odors and refreshes the fabric. Vacuum upholstered furniture thoroughly and clean any stains with appropriate cleaning solutions. Wash all pillow covers, mattress covers, throws, and blankets with Beach Sage plant-based Method Laundry Detergent for a beautiful ocean scent.

5. Kitchen and Bathrooms

In the kitchen, clean out the refrigerator, pantry, and cabinets, discarding expired items. Use baking soda and hot water to wipe the insides of the refrigerator and freezer. Wipe down countertops, appliances, and sinks with the homemade disinfectant cleaner, followed by Mrs. Meyers Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner as a finishing touch. Although Mrs. Meyers is not a disinfectant cleaner, it is a natural cleaner that leaves the home smelling lovely. Personally, the peony and rose scents smell delightful.  For the bathrooms, scrub tiles, grout, and fixtures with the homemade disinfectant cleaner and replace old shower curtains and liners. Ensure all towels are free of holes and can stand up to another season; otherwise, replace them with new ones.

6. Windows and Doors

Clean windows inside and out to let in maximum sunlight. Dust and wipe down windowsills and tracks. Check screens for any holes and repair as needed. Clean sliding door tracks to ensure they operate smoothly. The best cleaner for windows and sliding door tracks is a homemade disinfectant that removes all the nasty stuff from the tracks. The recipe is below. I use it daily to clean showers; it helps keep the bathroom spotless and is cheap to make. Need a homemade disinfectant cleaner? Here is a simple ingredient disinfectant cleaner: pour 16 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, 16 ounces of 70% isopropyl alcohol, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of blue Dawn dishwashing soap. Mix all the ingredients in a spray bottle and start cleaning!

7. Outdoor Areas

Finally, don’t forget your outdoor spaces. Sweep porches, patios, and decks, and hose down outdoor furniture. Check for any needed repairs and address them promptly.

With these steps, your beach house will be spotless and ready for summer fun. Enjoy your freshly cleaned haven and make the most of the sunny days ahead!

If there’s a heaven for me, I’m sure it has a beach attached to it.

Preserving Liberty: A Vital Endeavor

July 4, 2024 By admin No Comments

The preservation of liberty is a cornerstone of any thriving society. The American Constitution separates the power of government into three branches: the legislative, whose job is to make the laws; the executive branch charged with executing the laws, and the judicial branch, which was chosen to interpret the laws as written not from a personal stance. American liberty seems to be at stake these days because one branch is not focusing on its purpose!

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. – Thomas Jefferson

This enduring truth reminds us that freedom must be actively safeguarded through informed citizenship and unwavering commitment to democratic principles. Each generation bears the responsibility to uphold and defend these liberties, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same rights and freedoms. In an ever-changing world, our dedication to protecting liberty is crucial, reinforcing the foundations of justice, equality, and individual rights that define a free society.

God Bless America!
